The late Mrs. Beatrice Lokko was the founder of Children of Ark Early Childhood Development Centre. Beatrice was passionate about education having spent all her adult life in the teaching profession. She started teaching in 1973 when she was posted to the Accra Academy for National Service She taught English Language and
Literature. She continued working at the school after the
service period ended. Beatrice worked with great dedication and was highly recommended by
the school administration, Board Members and parents for the position of Assistant
Headmistress of the school in 1992 and when the position of Headship became
vacant in 1997 she applied for it. She was appointed the Head of the school though
it was an all-boys’ institution. She worked even harder and transformed the
school into a one of the best schools in the country. Many skeptics who had
doubted her ability to manage a boys’ institution came back to praise her for the
good work she was doing there. After ten years in the position of Headmistress, Beatrice decided to move into another area of education
and applied for the position of Director of Education for the Akwapim South district. She was
appointed to that position in June 2004.
Her work as District Director involved monitoring and supervision of schools in the district. She visited the district schools to assess teaching and learning activities, the state of infrastructure and the needs of institutions. She met with community opinion leaders ( chiefs, executives of Parent teachers Associations and School Management Committees) to discuss their problems and plans for their schools. Beatrice submitted reports on the schools to the Chief Executive of the District Assembly and lobbied for assistance for the schools. As Director for Education, she participated in most of the school official programmes like Open / Speech Days, PTA meetings, Sports and Culture Festivals. She also attended District Assembly meetings on education- school feeding, youth employment, health and sanitation, budget etc. Beatrice participate in workshops organised by the Ghana Education Service, Donor agencies, and community- Based Organisations.
Her included selection of teachers for employment, promotion and training. She took care of the welfare needs of staff and learners. She attended teacher association meetings and programmes and used such occasions to encourage them, listen to their problems and suggest solutions. She made time to meet individuals with special needs or problems. Beatrice also counseled teachers who had health problems or were troubled in one way or the other.
Beatrice was a caring person and anyone who came into contact with her would testify of that. She was troubled that there were kids walking around in the Mamprobi area who did not attend school. She was concerned that uneducated children would grow up to be vagabonds and criminals and she made it a point to ensure that the kids in the area who were from poor families took advantage of Free primary education. She did not hesitate to help them with pocket money and with school supplies.
It was no surprise therefore when Beatrice decided to start the Children of the Ark Early Childhood Development Centre. Her dream was to provide a safe environment for the children in the community. She looked forward to retiring from the GES to invest her time, experience and resources into the Ark. Alas, Mrs. Beatrice Lokko passed away too soon.
The family of Mrs. Beatrice Ablah Lokko have pledged to make her dream for the Children of the Ark...become a reality.
